The Second edition of the Association of Somali Students in Turkey (UMASET) organized Soccer tournament reached its climax this weekend in Bursa with Karabük team lifting the trophy after drubbing Kastamonu 5-1.
The week-long bonanza brought together ten teams of Somali students from Manisa, Samsun, Kastamonu, Denizli, Uşak, Karabük, Giresun, Istanbul, Kocaeli and Bursa, the host city.
Somalia Ambassador to Ankara, His Excellency Ambassador Jama A. Mohamed was the guest of honour alongside the host Mayor Mr. Alinur Aktaş.
Ambassador Jama who handed the trophy to the eventual winners, Karabük, appreciated the host mayor Mr. Alinur for the hospitality and reiterated the longstanding brotherhood between Somalia and Turkey.
“Our strong bond is one that existed since the Ottoman era, and will only keep getting stronger,” he said.
“This city Bursa, has a special place in our heart because it has been the first capital of the Ottoman Empire”. He finished.
On his part, Mayor Alinur challenged the Somali youth to invest their knowledge and strength in building Somalia in the near future.
“When you graduate, kindly go back and rebuild your country, participate in its development, don’t sit back. He added”.
The Embassy’s Cultural Attache Mr. Abdiaziz Sharaf, who played a critical part in the coordination of the tournament on behalf of the Embassy was also present.
There were moments of fun in the halftime break as Ambassador Jama kept motivating both sides while urging them to enjoy the game and play fairly.
Ambassador Jama also praised the students after receiving positive feedback on their progress from representatives of various foundations that work with Somali students in Turkey.
He assured the students that the Embassy will keep tracking their progress and provide support so as to boost Educational cooperation between Somalia and Turkey.
The Ambassador later thanked the organizers and partners including Husni Samatar, from the leadership of the organizer, Umaset.
The long day exciting event between Kastamonu and Karabük at Bursa’s Fethiye Sports Complex finished with Karabük, dressed in White kit lifting the glittering trophy.
The winners and runners-up were awarded medals with the best players also receiving individual awards.
